What's new in Swift and SwiftUI?

I've been busy writing about all the many changes introduced in the latest Swift and SwiftUI updates, and I've boiled them down to two key articles:

Once again, Apple has released a wide range of features and improvements that expand the kind of software we can build.

This time, though, the Swift changes are particularly important because Swift 6 introduces a huge amount of new functionality – not a surprise given that it was Swift's 10th anniversary!

I'll be writing more about Swift and SwiftUI changes as things settle down over the beta period, but for now there's a lot to be getting on with. If you're short on time, I'd recommend these three articles:

News from friends

One of my highlights in WWDC week is getting to watch James Dempsey and the Breakpoints. This is partly because James writes some really great songs about Swift, SwiftUI, Xcode, and more, and partly because my friends are on stage (shout out to Adrian, Curt, Daniel, James, Laura, Serenity, Sommer, and TJ!).

But honestly the most wonderful thing they do is direct all the ticket revenue – literally 100%! – to important charitable causes. Year after year, show after show, James and co have raised countless thousands of dollars to help make tech a better place, and I'm endlessly grateful for that.

One more thing…

WWDC24 week is always the busiest time of year for me, not least because Apple drops a huge number of APIs and announcements all at once.

However, I always try to make as much time as I can for community events while I'm there, this year going to the Emerge Tools happy hour, RevenueCat's arcade event, iOS Dev Happy Hour, the Swift Community Social, and more.

On Monday evening – the busiest day of my whole year, I think, given that's the day Apple unleashes all their new releases! – I dropped by a wonderful event called Students, Swift, Stars, which celebrates the incredible work of Swift Student Challenge winners.

This event hosts young developers who represent the future of our community, and it's just wonderful to see the things they make. Every single year they come back with fresh innovation, fresh ideas, and fresh things that blow my mind – one student built an app that uses image recognition to detect electronics parts, then created a virtual breadboard to show you how they connect up!

As much as I love writing code, seeing what folks build always excites me more – seeing people, particularly young people, use the skills and excitement they have to build something that solves problems in wonderful new ways.

To everyone who won the Swift Student Challenge this year, as a distinguished winner or otherwise: congratulations on your success, and thank you for inspiring all of us.
