WWDC22: Call to code

Apple has just announced WWDC for this year, taking place from June 6th to the 10th and entirely online apart from an invite-only special event on Monday.

Apple’s design for this year is a huge Swift logo, and although it’s rarely possible to read much into their event graphics, it is of course fun to speculate – perhaps it’s time for Core Data to get the SwiftUI treatment?

Of course, there are lots of things we can be sure of, including new iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS releases, Swift 5.7 landing with distributed actor support, and a huge collection of session videos, labs, digital lounges, and more.

And if you’d like to take part in this year’s student challenge, you’ll need to build a three-minute interactive scene using Swift Playgrounds. If you haven’t had chance to try out Swift Playgrounds yet, I have a tutorial that will help jump start you, available as both text and video.

Ready for Advanced SwiftUI?

I’m running a new workshop in May, teaching folks a variety of advanced SwiftUI skills they can apply to their projects immediately. It will take place entirely online, 9am to 4pm US Eastern time, and you can choose one of two days: May 4th and May 8th. While taking the time to hone your skills is always a good idea, these two workshops both have a second major benefit: all income from ticket sales goes to charity! I am raising money to help two Afghan girls come to the UK to study, because they have been denied access to education since the Taliban took over.

It took a lot longer than hoped, but I've finally released a major rewrite of my book Hacking with macOS, with all the AppKit projects now rewritten using SwiftUI. App Builders takes place May 16th and 17th in Locarno, Switzerland
Appdevcon takes place June 20th through 24th in Amsterdam
SwiftConf takes place August 17th and 18th in Cologne, Germany
360|iDev takes place August 28th through 31st in Denver
iOS Dev UK takes place September 5th through 8th in Aberystwyth, Wales

Even if you’re attending events like these online, they are a great place to learn something new, meet others, and hopefully enjoy yourself too!

Some April fun

Normally I aim to send out my newsletter on the 1st of each month, but I wanted to avoid it this month because it was of course April 1st – April Fool’s day, also known as “stay off the internet day.”
